Cymdeithas Hanesyddol Grangetown Historical Society

Ar Chwefror 7fed euthum i gyfarfod Cymdeithas Hanesyddol Grangetown, grŵp bywiog o bobl sy’n cwrdd unwaith y mis.  Nes i gwrdd â fy ngyfwelai cyntaf ar  brosiect LlLFf /VFF, is-gadeirydd y gymdeithas Rita Spinola, fu’n gweithio yn ffatri Horrocks ar Heol Penarth.

Cefais groeso mawr gan Zena Mabbs y cadeirydd, a’r aelodau eraill.  ‘Roedd ganddynt agenda prysur iawn i’w drafod ond fe rhoddwyd cyfle i fi siarad am Lleisiau o Lawr y Ffatri  / Voices From the Factory Floor gyda’r deg aelod ar hugain a mwy oedd yn bresennol.  Cefais gyfle hefyd i ddosbarthu taflenni oedd yn gofyn i fenywod fu’n gweithio mewn ffatrioedd i gysylltu â fi a chytunwyd byddai’n bosib i fi osod apêl pellach ar wefan cymunedol Grangetown.  Gobeithio bydd y cyfan yn dwyn ffrwyth cyn bo hir!

ON            Kate Miller yw’r unig enw benywaidd sydd ar gofgolofn y Rhyfel Mawr yn Grangetown.  Ymunodd Kate a’i thair chwaer â’r fyddin fel cogyddesau ar faes y gâd. ‘Roedd hi’n 27ain pan gafodd ei lladd.  Mae’r gymdeithas hanes yn edrych am ei disgynyddion a fydde’n gwybod mwy ar ei hanes o bosib.

Last week I managed to attend a meeting of the Grangetown Historical Society – a vibrant group of people who meet on the first Friday of every month.  I met up with my first interviewee on the VFF / LlLFf project, deputy chair of the society Rita Spinola who worked in Horrocks’ factory on Penarth Road.  I was given a warm welcome by the chair Zena Mabbs and the other members. They had a busy agenda to discuss but I was given an opportunity to talk about Voices From the Factory Floor / Lleisiau o Lawr y Ffatri to the thirty strong meeting.  I was also able to distribute leaflets asking for women who worked in factories to come forward and contact me and it was agreed that I could put an appeal on the Grangetown Community website.  I hope this foray bears fruit in the near future!

PS            The only women’s name on the Grangetown Great War memorial is Kate Miller. Kate and her three sisters joined up and went to the front to work as cooks. She was 27 when she was killed.  GHS are searching for descendants who might know more about her story.
